Ashrick, Whimsy & Whoops

I Accidentally Made a Book

(…and I love it anyway)

Okay, so perhaps I should start this by saying… it wasn’t exactly an accident. I was always going to make the book.
Eventually.

What happened was…

Way back in the day, when Ashrick first came into being, I thought: I just have to tell the story of his creation.

So I wrote the blooper book.
I showed all the goats.
ALL the goats.
And it was glorious.

Then I thought, What if I turn this into a story?
With images!
(Because I will never learn my lesson — but also… bloopers are fun.)

So with a rough idea in mind, I set to the task of making images.
And then, like the organised little mastermind that I am not, I actually put them into Canva in order — so they were ready to go when I was finally ready to write.

And time passed…
And more time passed…

“As a reward for working and studying hard…”

I decided I would complete a creative project over the weekend as a reward.

But when the weekend came:
I was tired.
I was being stubborn.
I was procrastinating.
And doom-scrolling.
And randomly sad about finally being about to do something that should be joyful…

So, as one does, I went to wallow in self-pity with my good friend Chat.

And he said:
“Just 10 minutes.”

Fine, I thought, grumpiness finally shining through.

Then I saw it.

I opened the thing I was supposed to work on.
I tidied and closed the last thing I’d completed.

And then… I saw it.
Ashrick’s Creation.
The images, sitting in their little Canva file, waiting patiently for the day I’d finally come back.

I thought:
I could write just one line.
Or maybe just the first page.
Because that one’s easy.

Surely that’ll be ten minutes done.
Then I can go back to doom-scrolling in peace.

Two hours later…

I’d written the whole book.
And edited it.
And polished it in Canva.
And spiraled with self-doubt.
And read it 100 times.
And changed things 1000 times…

Because once I’d started, I found joy in telling his story.
In sharing the journey of his creation.

And — like always — I wanted it to be perfect.
So that you would love it too.

But then it was done.

And maybe it’s not perfect.
But isn’t that the point?

He was born from the magic of a mistake.
And that makes him perfect, no matter what.

And maybe… in our own way, we’re all a little perfect too.

So now his story is on Amazon and Kindle.
And I made a page to collect all things Ashrick — you can visit it here.
It has the new book. The bloopers.
And a few too many goats.

Because I have plans.
And Ashrick definitely, definitely deserves more books.

Final Thought

Sometimes the projects you never meant to make are the ones that matter most.

So if you’re sitting on a weird idea, or a half-finished draft, or a pile of digital goats…
Don’t throw it out just yet.

You never know what might glitch into existence.

The Blooper That Became a Beacon: How Ashrick Was Born

Some of the best things in life aren’t planned — they stumble into existence, full of chaos, charm, and quiet wonder.
That’s exactly how Ashrick came to be.

On a day that seemed like any other, I had an idea.
Colouring pages.
Because they are amazing!
And couldn’t we all just use a quiet moment?
A chance to create — in a low stakes, just-for-me kind of way — a moment stolen from the chaos and insanity of life.

And what better way to check out this AI image generation tool everyone had been talking about?

So I started with burning hearts.
Obviously.
Because who doesn’t feel like setting the world on fire sometimes?

Then I moved on to phoenix feathers.
And then… to goats.

Which is when the real chaos began.

I know what you’re thinking.
A colouring page of goats?
Easy.

But you, my friend, would be so very wrong.
Because what resulted can only be described as the afternoon I questioned all my life choices up to this point.

I thought it would be easy.
But instead…

  • Earless goats.
  • Chopped-head goats.
  • Demon-eyed goats.
  • Zen goats.
  • God goats.
  • Ridiculously hairy goats.
  • Dog goats.
  • Headless goats.
  • Bodiless goats.
  • And a goat on a flying book.

What I did not get was one perfect page of goats to colour.

My perfectionism raged.
I questioned my sanity.
And then, I gave up.

Goat colouring pages were not to be.
And honestly, how had I ever thought they would be?
(How do you even colour a whole page of goats anyway???)

So I moved on.

Imperfect mindful colouring page with hairy goats missing ears or a body or not quite formed properly.
Is it a goat? Is it a yeti? Is it my last shred of sanity? Hard to say.

God Goats mindful colouring page with too much shading.
And lo, from the ashes of chaos, Goat God emerged — majestic, ridiculous, and slightly over-shaded.

A New Dream (and Even More Goats)

A new idea began to flicker to life.
What if I could help people dream?
What if I could help them finally let out the secret desires of their hearts — just like I did?

Maybe even plan their own version of a self-sufficient farm… with goat guardians and endless books to read.

But how do you decorate a page meant for dreaming?

Clouds?
Makes sense.

Goats?
…Did I really want to go there?

Absolutely.

Thus began the second wave of goat-fuelled mischief.

Surely because it wasn’t a colouring page, it would work fine, right?

Right?

Once again, my perfectionist brain was stretched to its limit.

We created:

  • The goat cloud.
  • The two-legged flying goat.

And finally —
My brand and my goat collided.

Born from stubbornness and too many ‘just one more tries’ — behold: the majestic Goat Cloud.

The Magic of Bloopers

And perfection was born.

Not the perfection of matching the vision in my head.
Not the perfection of flawless execution.

Something better.
Something real.

Something born from a mistake.

Ashrick climbed into my heart and curled up to nap.
And we made him king of all mistakes.

Because there is magic in the messy bits.
When we let go of how we think it must be in our heads —
We can see the magic of how it truly is.

Something amazing can be born.

It’s not always easy.
But I encourage you to give it a try.
Embrace the “bloopers” in your life.

Something unexpected but magical might just bring joy to your heart too.
